Healthy Snacks to Get You Over the Afternoon Slump

If you’re like most people, you’re all too familiar with the afternoon slump: the common experience characterized by a drop in energy and a desire to take a nap. For most people, the dip usually hits around 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon, and can make the rest of the workday feel like a challenge. While you may be tempted to reach for another cup of coffee or a sugary snack, these choices can lead to an even bigger slump later in the day. For a snack that will provide sustained energy and be totally guilt-free, consider some of the options below. And don’t forget to do all of your ingredient shopping at Nick’s of Clinton!

Focus on Protein

Protein is an essential macronutrient that’s necessary for maintaining energy levels and helping you to stay full for longer. By incorporating a protein-rich snack into your afternoon routine, you can combat the afternoon slump and prevent a blood sugar spike. Some healthy and delicious choices include:

  • Greek yogurt with fruit and nuts. Greek yogurt is an excellent source of both protein and probiotics, and can also be a good source of filling fat if you opt for a whole-milk version. When topped with fruit and nuts, you’ll experience both a sweetness and a satisfying crunch. Be sure to choose unsweetened Greek yogurt–but feel free to add a little honey if you need it!
  • Hummus and veggies. Hummus is a great source of protein, as it’s made from chickpeas. Whether you’re trying to adopt a plant-based diet or just want something that’s tasty and delicious, hummus is a great choice. Even better, hummus is super easy to make at home yourself. Just grab a can of chickpeas, tahini, lemon, and olive oil and put in a food processor. Add paprika, pepper, salt, garlic, or other spices to flavor. Enjoy with slices of cucumber, cherry tomatoes, carrots, bell peppers, or your other favorite vegetables.
  • Cheese and flaxseed crackers. Everyone loves cheese, and in moderation, cheese can be a healthy snack. To up the health benefit, pair it with a crunchy flaxseed cracker. Flax has become a more attractive health food due to its high quantities of alpha-linoleic acid, fiber, and protein.

Get a Boost with Carbs

Carbohydrates are a key source of energy for the body. And they’re also really yummy! Choosing complex carbs can provide a steady release of energy. Great choices include:

  • Oatmeal with fresh fruit. A small cup of oatmeal topped with some fresh fruit—or flax, chia, coconut, or nuts—can be a great option for an afternoon snack. Oats will provide long-lasting energy, and berries add essential nutrients and vitamins.
  • Whole grain crackers with avocado. Avocado is truly a power food! Packed with fiber and healthy fats, avocado will leave you feeling satisfied, and without any guilt. The right crackers can also provide a healthy source of complex carbohydrates.

Healthy Fats

Most of the snacks above also feature some fat in addition to protein and/or carbohydrates. Healthy fats are critical for brain function and energy maintenance, plus fat is arguably the tastiest of the macronutrients. Some favorite snack choices that feature healthy fats include:

  • Homemade trail mix. Making a homemade trail mix is super easy, can be less expensive than purchasing a pre-packaged version, and will likely be better for you, as you can choose to add ingredients that don’t have added sugars and seed oils. If you’re watching your sugar, choose sugar-free dried or dehydrated fruit, or consider some 100% cacao chocolate chips!
  • Nut butter with fruit slices. Almond and peanut butter are probably the most common nut butters, but you can find just about anything these days, including walnut, macadamia, and pecan nut butters! Enjoy with a banana or apple.

Restore Your Energy with an Afternoon Snack

If you are taking a break for a snack, it’s recommended that you snack mindfully—don’t eat mindlessly, as this can lead to overeating and even gastrointestinal distress. Instead, be intentional in what you choose to eat, how much you choose to eat, and how quickly you choose to eat it. What’s more, recognize that taking a break from work is important! If possible, step away from your desk for your snack and consider pairing with a short walk or some light stretching.
